Here are some helpful hints:
- Anagram A well-known cryptic clue type where the letters of a word or words are rearranged to form a new word or phrase. An anagram indicator word can help identify this type of clue.
- Homophone A wordplay device where a word that sounds the same as the definition has a different meaning. For example, "pair", "pare" and "pear".
- Charades A clue that breaks the answer into parts and defines them sequentially, similar to the game of charades.
- Hidden answer indicator Words like "some", "partly", "amid", or "in" can indicate that the answer is hidden within the clue.
Other types of cryptic devices include double definitions, containers, reversals, and deletions.
